Camps to Communities Soap Recycling Program
Turning Mining-Camp Waste into Community Impact

Camps to Communities is Woollahra Group’s award-winning soap-recycling initiative delivered in partnership with Soap Aid and participating mining and facilities-management organisations.
The program collects partially used soap bars from workforce accommodation, redirects them away from landfill and enables Soap Aid to recycle them into new, hygienic soap for distribution through community hygiene programs.
It connects waste reduction, responsible procurement and improved access to hygiene through one practical supply-chain solution.
The Challenge
Millions of individual soap bars are supplied to Australian workforce villages and accommodation facilities each year.
Many are used only once or twice before rooms are serviced and the remaining soap is discarded. This creates significant avoidable waste while communities elsewhere continue to experience limited access to basic hygiene products.
Camps to Communities was created to address both challenges.
How the Program Works
1. Responsible Product Supply
Woollahra Group supplies appropriately sized soap bars to participating workforce villages and accommodation facilities.
2. Guest Use
Workers and guests use the soap during their stay, leaving partially used bars behind when rooms are serviced.
3. Collection by Cleaning Teams
Cleaning teams place the used soap into specially designed collection containers rather than disposing of it as general waste.
4. Consolidation and Return
Facilities-management providers consolidate the collected soap and return it through the participating supply chain to Woollahra Group.
5. Collection by Soap Aid
Soap Aid collects the recovered material and transports it to an approved recycling facility.
6. Recycling and Reprocessing
The used soap is sorted, cleaned and reprocessed through Soap Aid’s controlled recycling system to create new soap bars.
7. Community Distribution
The newly manufactured soap is distributed through hygiene programs supporting communities with limited access to basic sanitation products.
More Than Six Tonnes Recovered

Through the combined efforts of Woollahra Group, Soap Aid, facilities-management partners, cleaning teams and participating mining operations, more than six tonnes of used soap have been recovered for recycling.
Every kilogram collected represents:
-
Less waste sent to landfill
-
Greater value recovered from an existing product
-
Improved participation in circular-economy practices
-
More soap available for community hygiene programs
-
A practical sustainability action involving the entire supply chain
Recognised by Industry

Camps to Communities has received significant industry recognition, including:
-
Rio Tinto Supplier Recognition Award for Environmental Sustainability
-
Sodexo Excellence Award for Market Maker in Sustainability
These awards recognise the collaboration, operational commitment and measurable outcomes created by the program’s participating organisations and frontline cleaning teams.
Collaboration Creates the Impact

Camps to Communities succeeds because every participant plays an important role.
Procurement teams select responsible products. Accommodation teams implement the collection process. Cleaning teams recover the used soap. Logistics partners consolidate returns. Woollahra Group coordinates the supply chain, and Soap Aid completes the recycling and community distribution process.
Together, these actions transform a commonly discarded product into a resource with renewed social and environmental value.
